The Treatment

What Is Whitening?

Professional teeth whitening uses a higher-concentration hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide gel activated by a specialized light to break down stain molecules on and within the enamel. This produces dramatically brighter results than any over-the-counter product can achieve.

The treatment effectively removes extrinsic stains from coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco as well as some intrinsic stains that develop with age. Results are visible immediately after the appointment and continue improving slightly over the following 24 to 48 hours.

One session typically achieves 4 to 8 shades of improvement. Results last 6 to 12 months with proper care, including avoiding heavy staining foods and drinks in the 48 hours immediately after treatment and maintaining good oral hygiene.

What to Expect

Before

A dental cleaning beforehand is recommended if you are due for one, as whitening gel works most effectively on a clean tooth surface. Brush your teeth before your appointment. Avoid heavy staining foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, and red wine the morning of your session.

During

A protective barrier gel is applied to the gum tissue to shield it from the whitening agent. The whitening gel is then applied to the tooth surfaces and activated with a specialized light. The process involves 2 to 3 application rounds within the same session. Total chair time is 45 to 60 minutes.

After

Avoid staining foods and beverages for 48 hours after your appointment — this includes coffee, tea, red wine, berries, and tomato-based foods. Your teeth are most susceptible to re-staining during this window. Mild tooth sensitivity lasting 24 to 48 hours is possible and normal. Fluoride application can help if sensitivity occurs.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How many shades whiter will my teeth be?
Most clients achieve 4 to 8 shades of improvement in a single session. Results vary depending on the nature and depth of staining. Coffee and tea stains typically respond very well. Deep intrinsic staining from tetracycline antibiotics or trauma may require additional sessions or have limitations.
Is professional whitening safe?
Yes. When applied correctly by a trained provider, professional whitening is safe for enamel and gum tissue. The gums are protected before the whitening gel is applied. Sensitivity after treatment is temporary and managed with fluoride.
Will it work on crowns, veneers, or bonding?
No. Whitening agents only affect natural tooth enamel. Crowns, veneers, and composite bonding will not change color with whitening treatment. If you have visible dental restorations, discuss this with your provider before treatment so expectations are set appropriately.
How long do results last?
Results typically last 6 to 12 months. Longevity depends on your diet, oral hygiene, and lifestyle habits. Avoiding staining beverages, using whitening toothpaste, and scheduling a touch-up session annually keeps your smile consistently bright.
Does it hurt?
Tooth sensitivity after whitening is common and temporary, lasting 24 to 48 hours. Most clients find it mild and manageable. Applying a fluoride treatment at the end of the session significantly reduces sensitivity. Over-the-counter sensitivity toothpaste used in the days before and after also helps.
