Botulinum toxin type A precisely relaxes overactive facial muscles to smooth existing lines and prevent new ones from forming.
Botox is botulinum toxin type A — a purified protein injected in tiny amounts into specific facial muscles to temporarily reduce their activity. When those muscles relax, the skin above them smooths out, softening lines and wrinkles that form from years of repeated expression.
The most common treatment areas are the forehead, the frown lines between the brows (called the 11s), and crow's feet around the eyes. Botox also addresses bunny lines on the nose, lip lines, chin dimpling, and neck bands.
Results appear within 3 to 7 days and reach their peak at 2 weeks. Most clients see effects lasting 3 to 4 months before a maintenance appointment is needed.
Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment. If you take blood thinners, consult your provider about pausing them 1 week prior if medically appropriate. Arrive with clean skin — no makeup or heavy moisturizers on the treatment areas.
Your provider marks the injection sites based on your muscle movement and facial anatomy. A series of small, precise injections are made using a very fine needle. The entire appointment takes 15 to 20 minutes. Most clients describe the sensation as minimal — a brief pinch at each site.
Do not rub or massage the treated areas for 4 hours. Stay upright for 4 hours after the appointment. Avoid strenuous exercise and excessive heat for 24 hours. Small bumps or redness at injection sites typically resolve within 30 minutes. Results start appearing at 3 to 7 days.
