What Are Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels — most commonly hyaluronic acid — that add volume, smooth lines, and restore structural support to the face. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in your skin, which makes it well-tolerated and reversible.

Common treatment areas include nasolabial folds (smile lines), marionette lines, lip volume and definition, cheek augmentation, tear troughs under the eyes, and jawline contouring. Each area calls for a different product and technique.

Results are visible immediately and last 6 to 18 months depending on the product used and the area treated. Denser fillers placed deeper last longer; softer lip fillers metabolize more quickly.

What to Expect

Before

Avoid alcohol for 24 hours and blood thinners such as aspirin or ibuprofen for 1 week if medically appropriate — this minimizes bruising. Come with clean skin. Share any allergies or previous filler history with your provider at the consultation.

During

A topical numbing cream is applied and left on for 20 to 30 minutes before injections begin. Most hyaluronic acid fillers contain lidocaine, which further reduces discomfort as the product is placed. The appointment takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the number of areas treated.

After

Some swelling and bruising is normal for 3 to 5 days — especially in the lips, which tend to swell more prominently. Avoid strenuous exercise, heat, and direct sun for 24 hours. Massage only if your provider specifically instructs it. Results continue to settle and improve over 2 weeks.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there any downtime?
Most clients experience mild swelling and possible bruising for 3 to 5 days. This is temporary and can usually be covered with makeup after 24 hours. Lips tend to swell more noticeably. Plan around important events by booking at least 2 weeks in advance.
How long do results last?
It depends on the area and the product. Lip fillers typically last 6 to 9 months. Cheek and jawline fillers can last 12 to 18 months or more. Nasolabial folds fall in the 9 to 12-month range. Your metabolism and lifestyle also affect longevity.
What is the difference between Botox and fillers?
Botox works by relaxing muscles to soften lines caused by movement — like forehead lines and crow's feet. Fillers add physical volume to areas that have lost it or need structure, like the lips, cheeks, or under the eyes. Many clients benefit from both in a complementary treatment plan.
Can fillers be reversed?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This is rarely needed but provides important peace of mind. If you are unhappy with results or experience a complication, the filler can be safely and quickly dissolved.
Are fillers safe?
Yes, when administered by a trained and licensed provider. Hyaluronic acid fillers have a strong safety record and are FDA-approved. Choosing a qualified injector is the single most important factor in a safe and satisfying outcome. At Maeven, all injections are performed by certified aesthetic providers.
